Heavy rainfall in Delhi-NCR on Tuesday led to significant traffic disruptions and travel delays across the city, according to reports on social media and updates from the Press Trust of India (PTI).
Traffic snarls were widespread, particularly near Tikona Park close to Jamia Millia Islamia, where commuters faced severe slowdowns. A notable 25-minute jam was reported on the flyover near the Radisson Hotel on NH-48, affecting vehicles traveling from Delhi to Gurugram.
Northwest Delhi also experienced heavy congestion, with slow-moving vehicles observed around Netaji Subhash Place in Pitampura and along major stretches of the Outer Ring Road. In south Delhi, key roads such as Mahatma Gandhi Road, NH-48, and Captain Gaur Marg from Lajpat Nagar were severely congested.
Commuters posted on social media about bumper-to-bumper traffic on Mathura Road, Old Rohtak Road, parts of ITO, and the stretch from Mahatma Gandhi Road to GT Karnal Road, illustrating the widespread nature of the disruptions.
While the rainfall provided some relief from the recent spell of muggy weather, it also compounded travel woes throughout the city.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the maximum temperature on Tuesday was expected to settle around 35 degrees Celsius, approximately 5.4 degrees above normal, while the minimum temperature was recorded at 28.7 degrees Celsius. Relative humidity stood at 74 percent at 8:30 am, with the IMD forecasting generally cloudy skies accompanied by light rain or drizzle throughout the day.
Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 114 at 8 am, categorizing the air quality as moderate, according to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
The traffic police advised commuters to plan their journeys in advance and avoid waterlogged roads wherever possible to minimize delays and inconvenience.
Meanwhile, adverse weather conditions also impacted air travel in the national capital. At least five flights scheduled to land at Delhi airport between 12:15 pm and 12:30 pm were diverted to Jaipur, an official confirmed to PTI.
“Persistent rainfall and thunderstorms are currently affecting Delhi, leading to possible delays in flight operations. Our teams are closely monitoring the situation to ensure your journey resumes as soon as conditions improve,” IndiGo stated in a post on X at 12:49 pm.
Heavy rains are likely to continue affecting Delhi-NCR, and commuters are urged to stay updated with traffic advisories and weather forecasts to navigate disruptions effectively.
