India’s cricket squad for the upcoming ODI series against Australia has been announced, featuring the return of icons Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. The series is set to begin on October 19, marking the first time Rohit and Kohli will represent India since the Champions Trophy earlier this year, following their retirement from Tests and T20Is.
### Change in Leadership
One of the key updates is the captaincy change. Shubman Gill has been named India’s new ODI skipper, replacing Rohit Sharma. At 26, Gill is already India’s designated Test captain, and this move signals a new leadership era in the limited-overs format. Despite the change, both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have confirmed their intention to continue playing ODIs through at least the 2027 ICC World Cup in South Africa.
### Tour Details: India’s Australia Tour
India’s tour of Australia will commence with a three-match ODI series, scheduled as follows:
– October 19 – Perth
– October 23 – Adelaide
– October 25 – Sydney
Following the ODIs, India will play a five-match T20 International series from October 29 to November 8. With the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup just months away, this series holds considerable significance for both teams.
### Notable Absences: Pant and Pandya Out
Wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant and all-rounder Hardik Pandya will miss the series due to injuries. Pant is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru after sustaining a fractured left foot during India’s England tour in July. Hardik Pandya suffered a left quadriceps injury in the recent Asia Cup Super-4 match against Sri Lanka.
### Squad Updates: Five Changes in ODI Lineup
The ODI squad sees five changes compared to the team that lifted the Champions Trophy in UAE. Besides Pant and Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Shami, and Varun Chakravarthy are also absent. They have been replaced by Nitish Kumar Reddy, Mohammed Siraj, Dhruv Jurel, Prasidh Krishna, and Yashasvi Jaiswal.
Dhruv Jurel has secured his spot as the back-up wicketkeeper, edging past Sanju Samson for the role.
