Mumbai: The country’s largest equity bourse, the National Stock Exchange (NSE), on Sunday announced a major initiative to support cancer treatment by investing Rs 380 crore to build a state-of-the-art facility at Tata Memorial Hospital (TMH).
The new 11-storey NSE multi-speciality hospital block and bone marrow transplant (BMT) centre will be established at the TMH-run Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research and Education in Cancer (ACTREC) located in the satellite city of Navi Mumbai. The groundbreaking ceremony for the facility, being constructed by Larsen & Toubro (L&T), was held on Sunday.
According to an official statement, the BMT centre will be the largest of its kind in the country. The facility is expected to serve approximately 1.3 lakh outpatient department (OPD) visits annually and conduct over 600 BMT procedures each year. It will also include 60 beds to accommodate patients undergoing treatment.
Spanning a built-up area of 2.4 lakh square feet, the project is funded through NSE’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts. The hospital block and BMT centre are anticipated to commence operations by July 2027.
NSE Foundation has partnered with ACTREC for this ambitious project, with the NSE board having approved it in March 2023. Ashishkumar Chauhan, NSE’s Managing Director and Chief Executive, stated, “Our aim is to support the healthcare needs of cancer patients and their families, and to contribute meaningfully to the fight against cancer in India. We believe this project will have a lasting impact on the lives of thousands of patients each year.”
Sudeep Gupta, Director of Tata Memorial Centre, highlighted the urgent need for the new facility. “Thousands of patients are currently awaiting BMT treatment. The new hospital block will address a critical gap in specialized services for treating comorbidities such as cardiac, pulmonary, neurological, renal, and gastroenterological conditions in cancer patients. Currently, most patients have to seek medical care at other hospitals because ACTREC has so far been a standalone cancer centre,” he said.
This development marks a significant step forward in enhancing cancer care infrastructure in India, providing advanced treatment options and specialized care under one roof.
