Australia’s Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped from the One Day International (ODI) squad for the upcoming series against India. In his place, Matt Renshaw—who could make his ODI debut—has been called up to join the team.
### Labuschagne’s Recent Struggles
The decision to omit Labuschagne follows a string of disappointing performances in ODIs. Over his last 10 innings, he managed a highest score of only 47 runs. Since the start of 2024, Labuschagne has amassed just 241 runs in 17 matches, averaging a low 21.90. During this period, he crossed the 50-run mark only once, scoring an unbeaten 77 against England in Nottingham last year.
His difficulties have been evident in key series, including the away ODI matches against Sri Lanka and the Champions Trophy earlier this year, where he scored 93 runs in five innings at an average of 18.60.
### Career Overview
Overall, Labuschagne has featured in 66 ODIs, scoring 1,871 runs at an average of 34.64. His record includes 14 half-centuries and two centuries. Notably, he played a crucial match-winning innings of fifty in the 2023 World Cup final against India.
### Poor Form in Test Cricket
Labuschagne’s struggles are not limited to limited-overs cricket. Earlier this year, he was also dropped from Australia’s Test team. According to ESPNcricinfo, during the 2023-25 World Test Championship cycle, he scored 974 runs in 20 matches at an average of 27.82, including one century and eight fifties in 36 innings. Among Australian batsmen with over 500 runs in this cycle and batting in the top seven, Labuschagne is the only one with an average below 34.
### Rising Star Matt Renshaw Earns His Spot
Matt Renshaw’s inclusion stems from his impressive form in List A cricket. He has stood out with a century for Australia A against Sri Lanka and scored 305 runs at an average of 50 for Queensland last season. In July, Renshaw delivered strong performances for Australia A with scores of 80, 106, and 62 against Sri Lanka A. He boasts six of his seven career List A centuries scored recently and has also proven to be a dependable middle-order batter in T20 cricket.

With Renshaw’s recent consistency and Labuschagne’s ongoing struggles, Australia hopes to bolster its middle order in the upcoming ODI clashes against India.
