Australia’s Marnus Labuschagne has been omitted from the ODI squad for the upcoming series against India. In his place, Matt Renshaw has been named, potentially marking his ODI debut. This decision follows Labuschagne’s underwhelming form in recent One Day Internationals.
### Labuschagne’s Recent Struggles
Since the beginning of 2024, Labuschagne’s ODI performance has been disappointing. Over 17 matches, he has scored just 241 runs at an average of 21.90. During this period, he has only passed the 50-run mark once, an unbeaten 77 against England in Nottingham last year. His difficulties were evident in the away ODI series against Sri Lanka and the Champions Trophy earlier this year, where he managed only 93 runs in five innings at an average of 18.60.
### Overall ODI Record
Despite recent struggles, Labuschagne’s career ODI stats remain solid. In 66 matches, he has accumulated 1,871 runs at an average of 34.64. This includes 14 scores of 50 or more, featuring two centuries. Notably, Labuschagne played a match-winning fifty in the 2023 World Cup final against India.
### Test Form Also in Decline
Labuschagne’s troubles are not limited to ODI cricket. Earlier this year, he was dropped from the Australian Test squad. According to ESPNcricinfo, he averaged just 27.82 during the 2023-25 World Test Championship cycle, scoring 974 runs across 20 matches. His tally included only one century and eight fifties in 36 innings. Among Australian batsmen with over 500 runs in this cycle who bat in the top seven, Labuschagne’s average is the lowest.
### Rising Star Matt Renshaw Earns Selection
Matt Renshaw’s inclusion is a reflection of his excellent form in List A cricket. The Queensland batsman impressed with a century for Australia A against Sri Lanka and scored 305 runs at an average of 50 last season. In July, he continued his strong performances for Australia A with scores of 80, 106, and 62 against Sri Lanka A. Renshaw has now notched six of his seven List A centuries during this period and has also emerged as a dependable middle-order batter in T20 cricket.

Labuschagne’s omission marks a significant shift in Australia’s ODI setup as the team looks to rejuvenate its batting lineup ahead of a challenging series against India. Meanwhile, Renshaw’s selection signals faith in his ability to step up and make an impact on the international stage.
