Chandigarh: Haryana Inspector General of Police (IGP) Y Puran Kumar allegedly shot himself at his residence in Sector 11, Chandigarh, on Tuesday afternoon.
According to the police, Kumar reportedly used his service revolver to take his own life. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Chandigarh, Kanwardeep Kaur, informed newspersons that information about the suicide was received around 1:30 pm from House No. 116, Sector 11. Kumar, a 2001 batch Haryana cadre IPS officer, was first discovered by his daughter in the basement of the house, which is soundproof.
The forensic and police teams have initiated investigations into the incident. Kumar’s mobile phones, documents, and other personal belongings found at the spot have been taken into custody for further examination, the SSP added.
Kumar’s wife, Amneet P Kumar, a senior IAS officer posted as Commissioner and Secretary of the Foreign Cooperation Department, Haryana, is currently in Japan as part of a delegation led by Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Saini. She is expected to return by Wednesday.
Recently, Kumar was transferred to the Police Training Centre in Sunaria, Rohtak. Prior to this, he served as the IGP of the Rohtak range. Sources note that Kumar had raised questions over the promotions of certain IPS officers in the recent past.
His sudden death has come as a shock to both police and administrative circles. Additionally, there are unconfirmed reports suggesting that Kumar took the gun from a gunman before the incident.
Investigations are ongoing. Further updates will follow as more information becomes available.
