– **1781:** British troops under General Lord Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown, Virginia, signaling the nearing end of the American Revolution.
– **1914:** The First Battle of Ypres began during World War I.
– **1960:** Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. was arrested during a sit-in protest at a segregated lunch counter in Atlanta. This event was among the early non-violent protests that Dr. King helped lead during the civil rights movement.
