This 1998 Subaru Impreza WRX STi was modified under previous ownership in Japan and was acquired in 2021 by the seller, who imported it to the US in October 2023.
It is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter EJ20G flat-four engine, reportedly overhauled within the last 5,000 kilometers. The engine features significant upgrades including a Naprec dynamically balanced crankshaft, Max Speed connecting rods, an HKS blow-off valve, dual oil catch cans, a SYMS Racing exhaust manifold, a Sard catalytic converter, and a Koyo Type R radiator. Supporting components include a GRB-sourced fuel pump, a Legacy-sourced 110-amp alternator, a GDB-A WRX-sourced power steering pump, and an SG5 Forester-sourced air conditioning compressor. The engine’s timing belt, tensioner, fuel and coolant hoses, and air conditioning condenser have also been replaced.
Power is delivered to all four wheels through a six-speed manual transaxle paired with a 3.90:1 R180 rear differential, reportedly sourced from a second-generation STi. Additional drivetrain modifications include a Toda Racing flywheel and clutch disc, as well as urethane shifter bushings.
The exterior has been refinished in Lexus Ultra White (083), according to the seller. It features a WRX STi Version 6-style front bumper cover and headlights, a fiberglass vented hood with functional scoop and Zero Sports cooling ducts, Laile side sill reinforcements, a rear wing, rocker extensions, and a rear window wiper. Gold-finished 17″ STi wheels are mounted with 225/45 Nankang Sport NS-2R tires.
Braking and suspension modifications are extensive. The ABS system has been deleted, replaced with a Wilwood brake bias adjuster, stainless-steel brake hoses, STi-branded Brembo calipers on the front, Brembo rear calipers, and a GDB-sourced master cylinder and booster. The suspension includes KYB Real Sports Damper Spec TR coilovers fitted with Endless springs, a Cusco strut tower brace, a 2006 WRX front subframe, and a 2006 STi steering rack. It also features second-generation STi front lower control arms, ball joints, rear control arms, sway bars, lateral links, and trailing arms, as well as 2005 STi knuckles with 5×114.3 hubs.
Inside, the cabin is trimmed in black and blue cloth upholstery with red accents, stitching, and STi embroidery on the front bucket seats’ backrests. The dashboard houses an Alpine head unit, while an Eclipse head unit is mounted in the center stack. Additional interior features include a Clifford security system, a third-generation-style shift knob, USB charging outlets, and a Neo Tokyo rearview mirror.
A Crosstrek-sourced three-spoke steering wheel with operational controls frames a Defi Sports Display universal instrument cluster that monitors water and oil temperature and pressure, as well as G-force levels. The digital odometer reads 4,500 miles. Other gauges include a fuel level indicator and a Greddy Profec electronic boost controller.
This modified GC8 STi is offered at no reserve and comes with Japanese literature, spare parts, and a clean Michigan title in the seller’s name. The photos in the listing and gallery were taken in October 2024; the car has since traveled approximately 100 miles.
This listing is a relist after the vehicle was previously sold on Bring a Trailer in October 2024. The winning bidder failed to complete the purchase—not due to any issues with the car. Their participation on BaT has been restricted, and their buyer’s fee was not refunded.
Overall, this impeccably modified WRX STi blends period-correct styling enhancements with substantial performance and handling upgrades, making it a compelling choice for enthusiasts seeking a unique and well-maintained example of the iconic GC8 chassis.
