**Day 27 of the Schumer Shutdown Causes Significant Flight Delays at DFW Airport**
Today marks day 27 of the ongoing Schumer Shutdown, which continues to impact air travel across the nation. At Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), incoming flights have been delayed by an average of at least 18 minutes. Additionally, departing flights were grounded due to staffing shortages on Monday afternoon, starting at 3 p.m. local time.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) website, flights bound for DFW are currently experiencing average delays of 18 minutes. These delays are expected to remain in effect until 9:59 p.m., the FAA confirmed.
Zachary Greiner, a spokesperson for DFW Airport, explained in an email to *The Dallas Morning News*: “The FAA implements air traffic management programs based on its capacity for safe operations. Beyond that, I would refer you to the FAA for any specific details about their staffing. As always, we encourage travelers to check their flight status with their airline.”
As of 3 p.m., DFW, which serves as the central hub for American Airlines, reported 301 flight delays and two cancellations, according to data from flight-tracking site FlightAware.
The current government shutdown began on October 1, when Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer led efforts to shut down the government over a dispute focused on healthcare benefits for undocumented immigrants. Since that date, the Senate has failed to reopen the government in 12 separate instances. Meanwhile, the House of Representatives remains out of session.
The staffing-related disruptions are not limited to DFW. On Sunday, the FAA issued a ground stop at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) due to similar staffing shortages. Flights headed to LAX were held at their originating airports starting at 11:42 a.m. Eastern Time, resulting in delays averaging one hour and 40 minutes. While the FAA initially expected to lift the ground stop by 1:30 p.m. Eastern Time, it noted that restrictions might continue.
Other airports in New Jersey and Florida have also experienced delays and disruptions linked to staffing shortages caused by the ongoing shutdown.
Travelers are strongly advised to monitor their flight status directly with their airlines and allow for extra time when traveling amid these continued operational challenges.
