Former WWE head writer Vince Russo recently opened up about his real-life heat with wrestling legend “Rowdy” Roddy Piper. The intense confrontation took place during a TNA live event back in 2002, when Piper unexpectedly grabbed a mic and started shooting on Russo.
At the TNA pay-per-view event, Piper called out Vince Russo for running WCW out of business. He went further by accusing Russo of playing a role in the tragic death of Owen Hart. Speaking on a recent episode of BroDown with host Mac Davis, Russo recalled being in the arena at the time and how he felt compelled to step in.
“I’m outside the doors of the National Fair Grounds, and Piper is cutting his promo. Now he starts about me killing Owen Hart. Yeah, because I was the writer. So he starts talking about me, and he goes on and on,” Russo said. “I’m in the back and I’m getting furious and furious. I say to myself if nobody is gonna shut this guy up, I’m going in the building and I’m shutting him up myself.”
Russo continued sharing how he entered the ring during Piper’s promo: “The timing was when I walked in from my entrance way, he was in the ring, and his back was turned. I walk in the ring, I get in the opposite corner, he turns around and sees me, having no idea I’m in the state of Tennessee.”
Despite contemplating physical retaliation, Russo ultimately decided against it, wary of potential legal consequences. “I swear to God, this is what’s going through my mind. I don’t know what he’s gonna do. I’m thinking to myself, should I just lay-dive him and take my chances before he kicks my a*s. Then what was going through my mind was Hogan hitting me with that defamation of character. I’m like, bro, I don’t need any lawsuits from this,” he explained.
Fortunately, Russo and Roddy Piper later worked together in TNA, managing to settle their differences outside the ring.
