Florida State football coach Mike Norvell has faced significant criticism this season following another disappointing campaign. While many Florida State fans have called for Norvell’s firing, it appears the head coach is keeping his job—for now.
Florida State secured a big win on Saturday over Wake Forest, somewhat cooling the speculation surrounding Norvell’s future. The Seminoles responded with a dominant 42-7 blowout victory, just two weeks after a heartbreaking loss at Stanford. After that West Coast defeat, boosters were actively pushing for a coaching change. However, Saturday night’s convincing win is likely to delay those conversations until the end of the season, according to On3’s Pete Nakos.
The Seminoles began the 2025 season on a high note with a stunning upset over Alabama, which strengthened Norvell’s case for remaining at the helm. Since then, however, Florida State has struggled in ACC play and currently holds a 4-4 overall record.
Norvell is coming off a disastrous 2024 season in which the team won just two games. Saturday’s win over Wake Forest showcased a more productive offense, as the Seminoles racked up 421 total yards. Quarterback Thomas Castellanos threw for 271 passing yards and a touchdown, highlighting the team’s improved execution.
Despite the recent victory, the pressure remains on Norvell to continue delivering wins. Florida State is now just 1-4 in conference play. Nakos notes that “if FSU can run the table and finish 8-4, it could be enough for the head coach to return.” However, one source close to the situation told Nakos the win “doesn’t change anything” regarding Norvell’s future.
After the win over Wake Forest, Norvell expressed pride in his team’s resilience. “I thought they played together,” Norvell said postgame, according to the Tallahassee Democrat. “Guys responding to different situations. We just went out and got better. It was a tough stretch there. I am really proud of them.”
As the season progresses, all eyes will be on Florida State to see if they can build on this momentum and secure the wins that may ultimately determine Mike Norvell’s fate as head coach.
