Heart-pounding bodycam footage captured a dramatic moment when a Florida deputy saved a young boy by taking down a knife-wielding suspect with a single shot to the head. The incident occurred just outside Tampa on Sunday afternoon.
Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Anthony Gonzalez, 25, kicked down a bedroom door after hearing a 7-year-old boy pleading for help inside. Upon entering, Gonzalez found a man wearing body armor and a motorcycle helmet, holding a knife to the boy’s throat.
The deputy ordered the man to drop the knife, but the suspect refused to comply. After several warnings, Gonzalez fired one shot, incapacitating the assailant.
The suspect was later identified as 27-year-old Mario Camacho, who had been holding his own younger brother at knifepoint and choking him. A family member had called the police after witnessing the frightening assault.
Following the shooting, Gonzalez quickly pulled the boy to safety. Camacho was transported to the hospital but later died, according to ABC 7.
As per standard policing procedures, Deputy Gonzalez has been placed on paid leave while an investigation into the shooting is underway.
