India’s shooters kicked off their campaign at the ISSF World Championship Rifle/Pistol 2025 in Cairo, Egypt, with a spectacular performance on Day 1. The 40-member Indian contingent secured a total of four medals, instantly placing the nation among the global leaders at the prestigious event held at Egypt International Olympic City shooting range.
The highlight of the day was Army marksman Ravinder Singh, who clinched India’s first Gold medal. Competing in the Men’s 50m Pistol event, a non-Olympic discipline, Ravinder delivered an impressive score of 569-12x to finish at the top of the standings. Hailing from Jammu and Kashmir, the 29-year-old shooter set the perfect tone for India’s campaign.
Ravinder further contributed to India’s medal tally by teaming up with Kamaljeet and Yogesh Kumar to win the Team Silver in the same event. The trio posted a cumulative total of 1646-26x, narrowly missing Gold by just two points to the South Korean team.
Olympian Elavenil Valarivan was another standout performer, earning a remarkable double-bronze. In the Olympic Women’s 10m Air Rifle event, Valarivan won her first individual World Championship medal by securing Bronze with a strong final score of 232. She finished behind reigning Olympic champion Ban Hyo-jin of South Korea (Gold) and China’s Wang Zifei (Silver). Valarivan had earlier qualified for the final in fifth place, posting a qualification score of 633.4.
Valarivan’s medal count doubled when she joined forces with Meghana Sajjanar and Shreya Agrawal to claim the Team Bronze in the Women’s 10m Air Rifle event. The trio together registered a total score of 1893.3, adding another medal to India’s impressive haul.
In the Men’s 10m Air Rifle event, India’s Arjun Babuta also made it to the final after qualifying with a score of 632.5. Though he finished seventh with a final score of 145.0, his performance was commendable. The Indian team narrowly missed out on a podium finish, securing a strong fourth place in the team standings.
By the close of Day 1, India’s shooters had proudly amassed one Gold, one Silver, and two Bronze medals — a clear signal of the nation’s determination to dominate the ISSF World Championship Rifle/Pistol 2025. With momentum on their side, the Indian contingent looks set for a thrilling competition in the days ahead.
