**Zion Police Investigate TikTok Livestream Showing Fatal Hit-and-Run**
Police in Zion, Illinois, are investigating a troubling video that appears to show a woman on a TikTok live stream at the moment she hit and killed a man on Monday night. The video has sparked widespread discussion about the dangers of using a phone while driving.
According to TMZ, the crash occurred around 5:30 p.m. in the Chicago area. Darren Lucas, 59, a resident of nearby Beach Park, was struck by a car and later died at the hospital from his injuries. The 43-year-old woman driving the vehicle remained at the scene and cooperated with police.
Someone recorded the TikTok livestream, which shows the woman talking to her phone just before a loud bang is heard. Immediately afterwards, she exclaims, “F***, f***, f***. I just hit somebody.” The video cuts off shortly after. In the background, a child can be heard asking what happened, while another person checks if the driver is alright.
**The Dangers of Livestreaming While Driving**
The Lake and McHenry County Scanner was the first to report the incident. Lieutenant Paul Kehrli from the Zion Police Department stated that investigators do not believe drugs or alcohol were involved in the crash.
The Lake County state’s attorney’s office confirmed they are aware of the video but could not comment further due to the ongoing investigation.
The TikTok user initially went by the username “Tea_Tyme_3,” but has since changed it, made her account private, and removed any reference to Zion, Illinois, from her profile.
A Reddit user who claims to have watched the livestream described the driver as distracted, saying she was “reading comments and grinning at her phone” rather than watching the road. The user expressed deep sadness over what they witnessed, stating, “It feels like I accidentally witnessed the moment someone’s life was taken and now I can’t stop thinking about the victim, and how avoidable it was.” They added that the sound of the crash continues to replay in their mind.
**A Heartbreaking Reminder**
This tragic event adds to a series of recent heartbreaking incidents in Illinois, including a gubernatorial candidate who recently lost four family members in a helicopter crash.
Research has long shown that using a phone while driving significantly increases the risk of crashes. This awful situation serves as yet another stark example of those dangers, much like other tragedies involving distracted or young drivers.
Chris King, Lucas’s son-in-law, shared his family’s grief with the Lake and McHenry County Scanner, saying that hearing about the video made them “hold our loss tighter to our hearts.” He added, “We will continue to pray for what the driver must be going through. We are trying to find our way to live without someone we cherished so much.”
