President Donald Trump signed legislation to end the longest government shutdown in U.S. history, officially concluding a 43-day impasse. This shutdown halted food aid to millions of households, canceled thousands of flights, and left federal workers unpaid for more than a month.
With Trump’s signature, the government can begin to resume normal operations, and federal workers are expected to return to their jobs starting Thursday.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Wednesday night, Trump stated that he and the Republicans had sent “a clear message that we will never give in to extortion.”
