MAGA’s ‘metastisizing mess’ is expected to worsen this week: analysis

Posted on 2025 年 11 月 16 日 by admin

President Donald Trump’s MAGA movement is “mired in conflict over Israel, white nationalism, purity tests, and disputes among its biggest personalities,” writes Axios — and the turmoil is only expected to intensify this week.

Although MAGA remains “overwhelmingly pro-Trump,” it has become “less relevant in shaping the president’s agenda.” These days, Axios notes, MAGA “can spend more time eating its own than feasting on liberals or establishment Republicans.”

### Infighting Within MAGA

While most Americans remain unaware of the intense infighting between far-right influencers like Ben Shapiro and antisemites such as Nick Fuentes, “they see flickers of MAGA fires when the mainstream media picks up on feuds,” Axios explains.

Despite the internal conflicts, MAGA still dominates Republican media outlets like Fox News and the National Review. For now, Trump maintains a firm hold on the movement. “MAGA was my idea. MAGA was nobody else’s idea,” Trump told Fox News’ Laura Ingraham recently. “I know what MAGA wants better than anybody else. And MAGA wants to see our country thrive.”

### Clash Over America First

However, “turmoil, conflict, and rivalry” are fracturing MAGA, Axios observes. The discord is unfolding around what it truly means to be “America First,” especially as Trump focuses attention on issues like Israel and Venezuela while many working-class Americans continue to struggle domestically.

Fights over this vision are breaking out across the movement. The rise of Fuentes and young white nationalists “often saying racist and misogynistic things unapologetically” only adds fuel to the fire.

An “open warfare” between Trump and former loyalist Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) exemplifies this split. Greene’s push for the release of files on the late convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, along with her criticisms of Trump’s economic policies, “signals a split between MAGA and America First,” according to Axios.

### Media Figures Stir the Pot

Former Fox News star Tucker Carlson’s critiques of Trump — particularly over his “lavish” support for Israel — also deepen the divide. Carlson argues that such a focus is “a massive distraction and total violation of America First principles.”

Other key MAGA talking points appear jeopardized by Trump’s consolidation of power. Axios reports a growing sentiment that MAGA’s championed issue of free speech “seems a little fraudulent or fake now that its leader has power in Washington.”

Carlson expressed his disappointment in an interview with The New York Times:
_”The most dispiriting fact of the last nine months is that huge proportions of the institutional Republican Party all kind of hate free speech every bit as much as the left does. They are every bit as censorious as some blue-haired, menopausal Black Lives Matter activist. And I just didn’t know that. And I’m disgusted. I feel betrayed. I take it personally.”_

### Frustrations Among MAGA Loyalists

MAGA loyalists are also growing increasingly frustrated by the exclusive access White House tech CEOs and Wall Street executives seem to enjoy. Additionally, many question Trump’s focus on “crypto, the White House ballroom, and foreign jet-setting,” rather than on his populist roots.

“President Trump, many people are saying, must quickly return to his own populist roots and campaign pledges, rather than entertaining the Big Pharma or Big Bank bosses,” writes prominent MAGA voice Raheem Kassam.

### Bigger Challenges Ahead

While Trump seems to be sitting out “the messiest fights” and disregarding the anti-Israel backlash, Axios points out that the discord within MAGA poses a significant problem for Vice President J.D. Vance — who positions himself as Trump’s heir apparent.

As Trump prepares to welcome Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to the White House on Tuesday, the conflict within MAGA is expected to deepen. The Crown Prince faces international scrutiny over the October 2018 murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, which a declassified US intelligence report concluded he approved. Despite this, he continues to hold power and has been granted immunity in a US lawsuit related to the killing.

To compound matters, the House of Representatives is set to vote on releasing the Epstein files—an issue that previously caused Trump’s public break with Greene and led to rare disappointment among notable parts of his base.

### Conclusion

MAGA remains a powerful force within American politics, but Axios concludes that “it’s not the united force it was six months ago.” With factional disputes growing and leadership challenges emerging, the movement faces an uncertain future as internal conflicts continue to unfold.
