The Boston Celtics are fun to watch this season.
Heading into the campaign, there was reason for concern in Boston. Championship windows don’t stay open forever, and while the Celtics made the most of theirs by winning it all in 2024, fans were hoping it was the start of something bigger. After Jayson Tatum went down with an injury, it felt like that window might need to be paused—maybe for a season, maybe longer—depending on the superstar’s recovery.
Instead, here the Celtics are. Boston currently sits third in the Eastern Conference with an 18-11 record, just 5 ½ games out of first place as of press time.
If you enjoyed the Brad Stevens-era teams featuring players like Marcus Smart, Terry Rozier, Kelly Olynyk, and Brandon Bass, this group will feel familiar. These guys play with heart, but the difference now is the talent at the top—starting with Jaylen Brown.
Whether people like it or not, Brown is an MVP candidate. He is having the best season of his career, showing why he was Finals MVP just a couple of years ago. Brown is averaging 29.4 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 4.9 assists per game, while shooting 49.7 percent from the field and 36.4 percent from three-point range. He is carrying this team and proving he’s the leader of this young group. It’s safe to say players are following in his footsteps.
I’ll admit, I was curious to see Brown assume the No. 1 option with Tatum out. When the two played together, they had a great understanding of each other, and normally, when it came to needing a clutch basket, Tatum demanded the ball. Now, with Brown showing he can run a team by himself, it’ll make for an interesting dynamic when Tatum returns.
Let’s be honest: this doesn’t feel like a championship team right now. Still, if the Celtics get Tatum back even at 70 percent for the playoffs, they could surprise some teams. The Eastern Conference isn’t as strong as it has been in recent years, and that could open a door for the C’s.
Boston soon starts a West Coast trip with games against the Trail Blazers, Jazz, Kings, and Clippers—matchups the Celtics should be aiming to win ahead of the season’s bottom half.
With Boston’s luxury tax situation, roster moves near the trade deadline feel likely. The Celtics could look to add a big man to help Neemias Queta and Luka Garza. Anfernee Simons, whose name seems to come up in every trade discussion and who is on an expiring deal, could be moved for frontcourt help or draft capital.
Much of that decision will depend on how Tatum’s rehab progresses. For now, there is trust in the front office and coaching staff. Brad Stevens has earned it. Joe Mazzulla has earned it. Early returns for owner Bill Chisholm have been encouraging, too.
It’s only December, but there’s a lot to enjoy about the Green and White. Let’s hope 2026 is a good one for them.
