A stray dog bit a Kenyan official at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi amid the ongoing World Para Athletics Championships. Following the incident, authorities promptly dispatched two dog-catching vehicles to the venue to capture the stray animal and ensure the safety of athletes, officials, and spectators, according to sources.
### Legal Background: Supreme Court Orders on Stray Dogs
This incident comes in the wake of a Supreme Court directive issued in August. A two-judge bench had ordered the Delhi Municipal Corporation to round up all stray dogs from city streets and place them in shelters. However, a subsequent three-judge bench modified this order, staying the blanket “no release” policy due to the impracticality caused by limited shelter space in Delhi.
The revised ruling mandates that only aggressive or rabid (or suspected rabid) dogs should be captured, vaccinated, and kept in designated pounds or shelters, balancing public safety with logistical challenges.
### Venue Significance: World Para Athletics Championships at JLN Stadium
The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium is one of Delhi’s premier sporting venues, regularly hosting major national and international tournaments. The current nine-day World Para Athletics Championships 2025 has drawn around 2,200 para-athletes and support staff from 104 countries.
Notably, the event is being conducted on a newly-laid Mondo track, which was inaugurated by Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on August 29.
### India’s Performance in the Championships
India is currently ranked eighth in the medal tally, having secured four gold, five silver, and two bronze medals so far. This is a commendable improvement, although their best-ever performance remains at the 2023 World Para Athletics Championships in Kobe, Japan, where India won a total of 17 medals (six gold, five silver, six bronze), finishing sixth overall.
At the 2023 edition held in Paris, India had set a previous record by winning 10 medals, including three gold, four silver, and three bronze.
