Mumbai: The Maharashtra Junior College Teachers’ Union (MJCTU) has intervened in the ongoing nine-day agitation by the staff of SIWS College, Wadala, who are demanding the removal of vice-principal Sheela Krishnan.
In a strongly-worded letter addressed to the Society Secretary, MJCTU vice-president S.L. Dixit objected to a circular issued by the management warning the agitating staff of strict action should they persist with the protest.
Dixit highlighted a serious concern regarding the violation of the Maharashtra Employees of Private Schools (MEPS) Act, 1977, and MEPS Rules, 1981. He stated, “The terms of employment conditions of service of all the junior college teachers are as per the MEPS Act and Rules. However, you have not implemented the said MEPS Act -1977 & MEPS Rules -1981.”
Addressing the teachers’ grievances, Dixit added, “The junior college teachers of your institution are lodging their protest in a democratic manner, diligently discharging their duties, but instead of receiving justice, they are being suppressed, which was unexpected of you.”
Further, he accused the management of unfair practices, saying, “Teachers who have performed well over the years were discontinued. Approximately 210 students failed in the XIth Standard at your junior college due to the revengeful attitude of Sheela Krishnan.”
He also pointed out irregularities in teacher allocations: “The Vice Principal has prepared incorrect ‘Sanch Manyatas’ (teacher allocations), apparently intending to label some teachers as surplus—for example, Mr. Suraj Bhosale. Moreover, she has been preventing admissions into the XIth Standard, reducing the number of divisions and subsequently decreasing the workload, which will ultimately lead to surplus teachers.”
The union demands the immediate withdrawal of the controversial circular. Failing which, Dixit warned that action would be taken against the general secretary.
The management has not responded to queries from the Free Press Journal (FPJ) regarding the situation.
