The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi has removed Dr. AK Bisoi, head of its Cardio Thoracic and Vascular Surgery Department, after a female nurse accused him of sexual harassment and character assassination.
The AIIMS Nurses’ Union initially approached AIIMS Director Dr. M Srinivas on September 30 with allegations against Dr. Bisoi. The issue escalated when the union took the matter to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) on October 9, alleging workplace bullying and sexual harassment.
### Allegations and Escalation
The Nurses’ Union accused Dr. Bisoi of using “vulgar, unprofessional, and derogatory language” toward female nursing staff. They also alleged that he intimidated nurses during morning rounds. According to the complaint, “These remarks were not only sexist, vulgar, and demeaning, but they also constitute serious character assassination.”
Further, the union claimed that Dr. Bisoi threatened to remove the complainant from her clinical posting as retaliation for raising concerns about his behavior.
### Interim Leadership Appointed
Following these serious allegations, AIIMS has appointed Dr. V Devagourou as the interim head of the Cardio Thoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) Department until further orders.
Senior doctors noted that this is the first time in recent history that a department head at AIIMS has been removed over such claims. The official order cited the complaint dated September 30 from a female nursing officer and subsequent representations from the AIIMS Nurses’ Union on October 4 and 7 as the basis for the decision.
### Controversial Past of Dr. Bisoi
While Dr. Bisoi has been relieved of his administrative duties, he continues to be associated with the institute pending the outcome of the ongoing inquiry.
This is not the first controversy involving Dr. Bisoi. He was suspended by the Union Health Ministry in 2009 over alleged irregularities and previously faced similar harassment complaints in 2019, although no action was taken at that time, according to The New Indian Express.

The AIIMS administration has affirmed its commitment to a safe and respectful workplace environment and assured a thorough and impartial investigation into the matter.
