The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) elections are slated to take place on October 6, the country’s election commission announced today. The election will see the general members body, known as the councilors, elect 23 out of the 25 board directors. From this group of 25 directors, a BCB president will be chosen to serve a four-year term.
### Tamim Iqbal Levels Accusations of Interference
Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal, who recently announced his intention to contest in the elections, has accused the current BCB president, Nazmul Hassan, of interfering in the election process. Speaking at a press conference in Dhaka alongside other candidates and former BCB directors, Tamim alleged that Nazmul Hassan unilaterally extended the deadline for nomination submissions.
According to Tamim, the election commission has been responsible for overseeing the elections since their appointment. However, Tamim claimed that the BCB president himself extended the nomination deadline twice. He highlighted a letter dated September 18, signed personally by Nazmul Hassan, which was not authorized by the BCB chief executive.
### Allegations of Constitution Violations and “Selection” Process
Tamim further criticized the election process, alleging a violation of the BCB’s constitution. He pointed out that board representatives from eight divisions and 64 districts were nominated by an ad-hoc committee rather than elected, calling this action a breach of protocol.
“If elections are conducted this way, it is no longer an election but a selection,” Tamim stated. “Elections should be open and fair for everyone.”
### Call for Fairness and Respect for Original Councilors List
Urging authorities to uphold transparency, Tamim appealed that the original councilors list be respected and left unchanged. Noting the upcoming election schedule, he emphasized the importance of maintaining fairness: “I hope that those declared as councilors on September 17 remain unchanged. There should be no modifications.”
The election timeline includes the publication of a draft voter list on September 22, followed by a final list on September 25.
### Breakdown of the BCB Election Process
The upcoming BCB election will consist of three categories for selecting the 23 elected directors:
1. **Divisions and Districts:** 10 directors will be elected from divisions and districts across Bangladesh.
2. **Dhaka Clubs:** 12 directors will be chosen from representatives of Dhaka-based clubs.
3. **Special Representatives:** One director will be elected from former cricketers, national captains, security forces, and councilors nominated by the National Sports Council.
In addition to the elected members, the Bangladesh government will appoint two directors to the board.
The elections are a critical moment for Bangladesh cricket as it looks to ensure transparent governance and sustained development for the sport nationally. The concerns raised by Tamim Iqbal have sparked calls for vigilance among fans and stakeholders alike to safeguard the integrity of the election process.
