Several gray wolves have been sighted in and around Ely since last spring, and some residents are rekindling a debate about the animal’s protected status. “Others have claimed the wolves are only following their natural prey into town after some residents started feeding the local deer,” reports the Minnesota Star Tribune. Ecolab is joining three Minnesota foundations to commit a total of $23 million to increase access to “safe, stable and affordable housing” in the East Metro, Ramsey County and rural Minnesota over the next five years, according to Twin Cities Business. Twin Metals is continuing to explore the possibility of copper and nickel mining near Ely. “[Twin Metals’ spokesperson Kathy Graul] said the exploratory drilling will bore deep underneath Birch Lake, part of the Kawishiwi River system, which flows north into the Boundary Waters,” reports MPR News. During the multiyear planning process, Minneapolis officials heard from pedestrians who said they wanted to feel safer in an area that often sees crime and a large police presence. The mural is just one piece of a larger safety improvement plan. WCCO TV reports that redevelopment plans for the historic Hamm’s Brewery site mostly vacant since 1997 is getting pushback from Saint Paul Brewing, which is located within the Hamm’s complex. “The company is accusing the city of focusing on constructing a new building, rather than staying true to their original aim of developing historic structures.”.
