The Congress party has strongly criticized the central government for its handling of the recent protests in Ladakh, which tragically led to the death of an ex-serviceman.
Jairam Ramesh, Congress’s communications in-charge, identified the deceased as Tsewang Tharchin, a veteran who had served at the Siachen Glacier and fought valiantly in the Kargil War. Notably, Ramesh highlighted that Tharchin’s father had also served in the Indian Army.
According to Ramesh, Tharchin was “protesting peacefully” for Ladakh’s inclusion in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution when he was killed. He described the incident as a matter of “deepest anguish and outrage.”
### Details of the Protests and Victims
The protests, which began as peaceful demonstrations demanding statehood for Ladakh and its inclusion in the Sixth Schedule, took a violent turn last week. Apart from Tsewang Tharchin, three other victims have been identified: Stanzin Namgyal (24), Jigmet Dorjay (25), and Rinchen Dadul (21).
Curfew has now been imposed in Leh for the sixth consecutive day. Additionally, mobile internet services remain suspended, and prohibitory orders banning the assembly of five or more people are in place across major parts of Ladakh, including Kargil.
### Security Measures and Detentions
Authorities have detained over 60 individuals in connection to the unrest. Among those detained is climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who was placed under the National Security Act and transferred to Jodhpur jail in Rajasthan. Two local councilors are also among those held.
### Security Review Meeting Scheduled
Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta is set to chair a high-level meeting at Raj Bhavan on Monday to review the escalating security situation in Ladakh.
The violent protests resulted in around 150 injuries. Key properties were targeted during the unrest, including the BJP office and the Ladakh Hill Council Secretariat, both of which were torched by mobs.
As the situation remains tense, authorities continue to enforce strict security measures to restore order in the region.
