The ongoing police investigation into the sexual harassment case against 62-year-old self-styled godman Chaitanyanand Saraswati has unveiled disturbing details.
### Arrest and Charges
Saraswati was arrested on Sunday in Agra after evading authorities for nearly 50 days. He faces allegations of sexually harassing 17 students at a private institute, alongside multiple FIRs registered against him for molestation, cheating, and forgery. Additionally, he is implicated in financial irregularities involving a trust valued at ₹122 crore.
### Evidence Uncovered
The police probe has revealed that Saraswati attempted to lure women with false promises. His mobile phone contained chats with several women, photographs featuring him alongside air hostesses, and screenshots of women’s display pictures (DPs).
Two female aides of Saraswati, who allegedly threatened victims into deleting lewd messages, are currently being questioned as part of the investigation.
### Suspect’s Uncooperative Behavior
According to officials quoted by news agency PTI, Saraswati has been uncooperative during interrogations. He has provided misleading information and shown no remorse for his actions. Despite being confronted with ample evidence, including documents and digital proof, Saraswati has repeatedly lied and remained reluctant to respond to accusations.
While on the run, he reportedly changed his appearance and hideouts in an effort to evade arrest. More than five police teams were deployed to track him down.
### From a Religious Math to a Management School: The Fraud
Officials revealed that in 1998, the Delhi Lieutenant Governor allotted a plot in Vasant Kunj to Sharada Peeth for establishing a math (religious institution). Saraswati was appointed as the senior official of this math. However, in 2008, without permission, he changed its name to Sri Sharada Institute of Indian Management.
Furthermore, a property belonging to the math was rented out without authorization. Authorities allege a ₹40 crore fraud was carried out using falsified documents linked to this institution.
