**UN Experts Shocked at ‘Industrial-Scale’ Executions in Iran**

*By Snehil Singh | Sep 30, 2025, 03:47 pm*

United Nations human rights experts have expressed shock at the dramatic escalation of executions in Iran, with over 1,000 people reportedly killed in the first nine months of 2025 alone.

The five UN special rapporteurs condemned the sheer scale of executions as “staggering” and a grave violation of the right to life. They highlighted that half of these executions were related to drug offenses, with an alarming average of nine hangings per day recorded recently.

### Government Response

Iran’s government has not yet responded directly to the UN experts’ statement. However, it has previously defended its use of the death penalty, emphasizing its application for what it terms “the most severe crimes.”

On the same day as the UN condemnation, Iran executed a man accused of spying for Israel. The judiciary’s Mizan news agency identified him as Bahman Choubi Asl, a database expert involved in sensitive telecommunications projects, allegedly acting as an agent for Mossad, Israel’s intelligence agency.

### Execution Statistics

Amnesty International and Iran Human Rights have documented over 1,000 executions in Iran since January 2025, already surpassing last year’s total of 975.

The majority of those executed this year were accused of drug-related offenses (50%), followed by murder (43%), and security-related charges (3%) such as “armed rebellion against the state,” “corruption on Earth,” and “enmity against God.” Spying accounted for about 1% of executions.

Both organizations raised concerns that many of these executions followed unfair trials accompanied by allegations of torture.

### Global Response and Calls for Action

The UN experts warned on Monday that Iran is conducting executions on an “industrial scale,” violating international human rights standards. They urged the global community to take diplomatic measures aimed at pressuring Iran to halt this escalating execution spree.

Particular concern was voiced regarding the 499 individuals executed for drug offenses, which the experts noted do not meet the international legal threshold of “most serious crimes” warranting the death penalty.

The situation in Iran continues to draw international condemnation as calls grow louder for urgent diplomatic intervention to uphold human rights and the right to life.
