With Nepal experiencing intense Gen-Z-led protests over the past few days, the situation now appears to be under control. Amidst these developments, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday held a telephonic conversation with Nepal’s Interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki.
According to an official statement released by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), PM Modi extended his condolences for the loss of lives during the protests in Nepal. He assured India’s readiness to work towards strengthening the special ties between the two countries and reiterated India’s full support to Nepal in its efforts to restore peace, stability, and progress for the people of Nepal, as reported by news agency ANI.
The MEA statement further added, “The Prime Minister congratulated Prime Minister Karki on her appointment and conveyed best wishes on behalf of the Government and the people of India.” It also noted that PM Modi extended heartfelt condolences for the tragic loss of life during the recent protests.
Furthermore, the Ministry of External Affairs emphasized that PM Modi conveyed India’s readiness to continue working closely with Nepal to further strengthen the special ties between the two nations. He reiterated India’s full support to Nepal in its efforts to restore peace and stability and for the progress of the Nepalese people.
Nepal’s Interim Prime Minister Karki thanked PM Modi for India’s firm support and reciprocated the desire to further strengthen relations between the two countries.
As per the statement, PM Modi also extended felicitations on the occasion of Nepal’s upcoming National Day. The leaders agreed to maintain ongoing communication to foster bilateral cooperation.
In a statement from Nepal’s Foreign Ministry, Prime Minister Karki conveyed her heartfelt greetings and best wishes to PM Modi on his 75th birthday, appreciating his message of solidarity. She further stated that, in response to the recent Gen Z movement, elections will remain the top priority of the current government. She emphasized a strong determination toward accountable, responsive, and corruption-free governance that reflects the aspirations of Nepal’s youth.
In response, the Indian Prime Minister assured his full support and cooperation aligned with the priorities of the Government of Nepal.
Sushila Karki, Nepal’s first woman Chief Justice and now the country’s first woman Prime Minister, is backed by the Gen Z-led movement that has significantly transformed Nepal’s political landscape. This movement, sometimes referred to as the Gen Z revolution, resulted in the tragic deaths of 74 people when police used lethal force to suppress protests against the regime of KP Sharma Oli, who is currently in hiding.
Interim Prime Minister Karki will hold office until the first week of March 2026, when elections are scheduled to elect a new executive head, marking the conclusion of her tenure.
