Google has recently cut more than 100 employees from design-related roles within its cloud unit. This move is part of the company’s ongoing cost-cutting measures and a strategic shift toward artificial intelligence (AI).
According to internal documents obtained by CNBC, the layoffs impacted teams involved in “quantitative user experience research” and “platform and service experience,” along with several adjacent groups. Some teams have been reduced by as much as half, marking a significant restructuring within the cloud design division.
Most of the affected employees are based in the United States and have until early December to secure another role within the company.
### Strategic Shift Toward AI
Since early 2025, Google has been offering voluntary exit packages across its US-based units. Alongside this, the company has been reducing the number of managers overseeing smaller teams and encouraging employees to incorporate AI tools into their daily workflows.
These layoffs and buyouts are not isolated to the cloud unit but have also affected other divisions, including HR, hardware, ads, search, finance, and commerce. This reflects Google’s broader strategy to accelerate integration of AI technologies across the organization.
### Leadership Perspective
Google CEO Sundar Pichai emphasized the importance of efficiency during this transition, stating the company must “be more efficient as we scale up.” This highlights that the headcount reductions are part of a larger, long-term plan to streamline operations while investing heavily in AI infrastructure.
By realigning resources and focusing on AI, Google aims to stay competitive with other industry leaders such as Microsoft and Meta as the technology landscape continues to evolve.
