The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has reportedly extended its support to the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) in the aftermath of the devastating stampede at a rally in Karur. The tragic incident, which took place on September 27, resulted in 41 fatalities and has been attributed to overcrowding and alleged mismanagement.
The TVK, led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, has been openly critical of both the Dravidian major DMK and the BJP during his political rallies, making the BJP’s outreach a significant development in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape.
**BJP’s Political Strategy: Capitalizing on Vijay’s Popularity**
National parties see an opportunity to strengthen their foothold in Tamil Nadu ahead of the 2026 assembly elections. The BJP, in particular, is looking to leverage Vijay’s massive popularity to bolster its position in the state.
A senior BJP leader has assured the TVK that the party will stand by them if they face any unfair targeting by the DMK. **BJP Blames DMK for Stampede Negligence**
In the wake of the tragedy, the BJP has held the DMK government responsible for alleged negligence that contributed to the stampede. The party has argued that holding Vijay solely accountable is unfair.
The BJP sees the TVK as a potential influential player in the upcoming elections, given Vijay’s widespread appeal. However, the BJP remains cautious about altering its alliance with the AIADMK, which remains a crucial partner for its ambitions in southern India.
**DMK Accuses BJP of Exploiting the Tragedy**
In response, DMK chief MK Stalin accused the BJP and the central government of exploiting the Karur stampede tragedy for political gains ahead of the elections. Stalin questioned why the BJP sent a delegation to Karur following the stampede, but had not done so in response to other national tragedies.
The DMK’s official publication, *Murasoli*, also criticized Vijay for his public video statement challenging state authorities to arrest him, labeling his actions as arrogant and publicity-seeking.
**Concerns Over AIADMK’s Political Strength**
The BJP is attempting to widen its influence in Tamil Nadu by mending relations with the AIADMK and initiating alliance talks. However, there are growing concerns about whether the AIADMK still possesses enough political strength to effectively challenge the DMK-led coalition.
A senior BJP leader acknowledged that the current political landscape in Tamil Nadu differs from previous years when AIADMK had strong charismatic leadership—highlighting the challenges ahead as BJP looks to make inroads in the state.
