**Honour Killing Case in Ratibad Solved Thanks to Nuisance Call Complaint**
Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): A chilling case of honour killing that shook Ratibad in November 2021 has finally been solved, owing to an unexpected lead from a nuisance call complaint.
During the Diwali festivities in November 2021, the forested outskirts of Samasgarh revealed a horrifying scene. On November 14, a woman and her eight-month-old child were found dead. Their bodies were in a decomposed state, bearing signs of sexual assault and strangulation, with their faces beyond recognition. Initially, the police were clueless about the perpetrators.
The 25-year-old victim, a resident of Bilkisganj, had married against her family’s wishes nearly a year earlier, which enraged her father, 55-year-old Kamal. According to the investigation officer Sudhesh Tiwari, then in-charge of Ratibad police, Kamal had been plotting to kill his daughter. He exploited the recent death of his granddaughter, who had succumbed to pneumonia, to carry out his plan.
In November 2021, Kamal, accompanied by his son, lured the woman and her deceased infant into the nearby Samasgarh forest under the pretext of burying the child. Once in the woods, Kamal confronted his daughter, accused her of dishonouring the family, sexually assaulted her, and strangled her. He later confessed to his son and elder daughter that he had killed her for bringing dishonour to the family.
The case took a significant turn due to a nuisance call complaint. Prior to her disappearance, the victim had used her neighbour Radheyshyam’s phone to call her husband while at her sister’s home. After she went missing and her phone remained unanswered, her husband repeatedly called Radheyshyam’s number. Annoyed by the persistent calls, Radheyshyam filed a complaint. This prompted the police to link the calls with the unidentified bodies found in Samasgarh.
Radheyshyam’s recollection that the victim had used his phone helped the police confirm the identities of the deceased. On November 17, the victim’s sister revealed the truth to the authorities, leading to the arrest of Kamal and his son. Subsequent interrogations uncovered the full gruesome details of this horrifying crime.
This tragic case highlights the devastating consequences of honour-based violence and the unexpected ways in which justice can be served.
