**WBCHSE Issues Clarification on Semester 4 Question Pattern for Higher Secondary Exams**
The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE) has issued a crucial clarification regarding the Semester 4 question pattern for the upcoming Higher Secondary (HS) examinations. This move aims to bring transparency and reduce confusion among students about the exam format.
**Understanding the 2x Alternatives Formula**
According to the Council, the number of questions to be attempted per unit or topic will follow a “2x” basis, where “x” represents the minimum number of questions required from a particular unit. Each question type will also provide options from the same topic, giving students a range of alternatives to choose from.
For example, in subjects such as “Learning & Learning Mechanism,” “Mental Health & Wellbeing,” “Education Technology,” and “Statistics in Education,” there will be a predetermined number of short-answer (Type 1 & Type 2) and descriptive questions, each accompanied by respective alternatives.
This 2x formula will be implemented for the majority of subjects, with only a few exceptions.
**Subject-Wise Question Patterns to Follow**
To further assist students, WBCHSE will publish detailed subject-wise question patterns along with this clarification. Students are advised to stay updated with these guidelines to ensure proper exam preparation and avoid any confusion regarding the pattern.
**Rollout of the Semester System**
Earlier this year, in mid-April 2025, WBCHSE introduced the semester system for classes 11 and 12 in state-run and state-aided schools. The 10+2 course is now divided into four semesters: Semester 1 & 2 for class 11, and Semester 3 & 4 for class 12.
The Semester 3 exams were conducted from September 8 to 22, 2025. The Semester 4 exams are scheduled to take place from February 12 to 27, 2026.
**Structured Exam Strategy**
With the implementation of the 2x alternatives formula, WBCHSE aims to establish a uniform and systematic examination procedure. This approach will allow students to strategize their responses effectively while ensuring fairness across all subjects.
Students are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the updated patterns and adhere closely to the guidelines to optimize their exam performance.
