Congress Leader Vijay Wadettiwar Criticizes MahaYuti Government’s Meager Relief Measures for Farmers
Mumbai: Congress Legislature Party leader Vijay Wadettiwar has sharply criticized the MahaYuti government for its inadequate relief efforts for farmers affected by heavy rainfall and crop losses. He described the announced aid as a mockery of the farmers’ grim situation.
Rising Farmer Suicides Highlight Distress
Wadettiwar drew attention to the alarming rise in farmer suicides, particularly in Marathwada, where 781 farmers took their lives between January and September alone. Of these, 74 suicides were reported in just the past 15 days, largely attributed to adverse weather conditions and the resultant crop failures.
While farmers had hoped for relief of ₹50,000 per hectare, the government’s announced compensation, based on National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) norms, falls far short of their actual needs. “This insufficient aid will not help farmers recover; it will only deepen their distress,” Wadettiwar asserted.
Comparison With Other States
Wadettiwar questioned why more prosperous states like Punjab are able to provide relief up to ₹50,000 per hectare without central assistance, whereas Maharashtra has failed to offer any substantial support. He also raised concerns about agricultural laborers, questioning whether they would receive any aid at all.
Loan Waivers Remain Pending
Further criticizing the government, Wadettiwar pointed out the unfulfilled promises of loan waivers for farmers ahead of upcoming elections. “The government keeps postponing the declaration without providing a clear timeline. Farmers are left in uncertainty,” he said, emphasizing the need for immediate action.
Political Remarks on Maratha Reservation
In a related note, Wadettiwar condemned recent remarks by Manoj Jarange Patil, who criticized Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over Maratha reservation issues. He highlighted that Rahul Gandhi was the first to advocate for conducting a caste-based census and for removing the 50% reservation cap, aiming to ensure fair representation for all communities.
“Jarange Patil’s criticism seems misdirected. Is his fight for the common people or against political opponents?” Wadettiwar questioned.
