A violent confrontation between Pakistani authorities and pro-Palestinian protesters resulted in the deaths of at least five people on Monday. According to Punjab Police Chief Usman Anwar, demonstrators opened fire on security forces, killing one officer and injuring several others.
The protest was organized by the Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) party, which claimed that hundreds of its supporters were injured during the clashes. The march began on Friday in eastern Pakistan with the aim of reaching Islamabad. Tensions escalated when protesters attempted to remove shipping containers blocking roads in Lahore, leading to violent clashes.
TLP chief Saad Rizvi was among those injured in the skirmishes. In a video released just before dawn on Monday, Rizvi called on security forces to cease firing and expressed his willingness to negotiate. Gunfire could be heard in the background as he spoke.
The protesters intended to hold a rally outside the US Embassy in Islamabad in support of Palestine. However, police reported coming under fire while trying to disperse the crowd, escalating the violence further.
The TLP, known for its strong stance on Islamic issues, rose to prominence during Pakistan’s 2018 elections by campaigning to uphold the country’s blasphemy laws, which prescribe the death penalty for anyone insulting Islam. Since then, the party has frequently organized protests—often violent—primarily condemning the desecration of the Quran abroad.
