Afghanistan cricketer Ibrahim Zadran has been fined 15% of his match fee and handed a demerit point for violating the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) code of conduct. The incident occurred during Afghanistan’s third ODI against Bangladesh in Abu Dhabi on October 14.
### Details of the Incident
Zadran was found guilty of breaching Article 2.2 of the ICC code, which relates to the “abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during an international match.” The breach took place in the 37th over of Afghanistan’s innings when Zadran, after being dismissed for 95 off 111 balls, struck a piece of equipment near the dressing room with his bat.
This dismissal marked his second consecutive score in the 90s, having also made 95 runs in the second ODI of the series.
Since Zadran admitted to the offense and accepted the sanction proposed by match referee Graeme Labrooy, a formal hearing was not necessary.
### Implications of the Demerit Point
According to ESPNcricinfo, this is Zadran’s first offense within a 24-month period. If a player accumulates four or more demerit points in such a timeframe, they are converted into suspension points, which can lead to a ban.
Two suspension points result in a ban from one Test match or two ODIs/T20Is, whichever occurs first.
### Zadran’s Performance in the Series
Despite the incident, Zadran’s contributions were pivotal in Afghanistan securing a clean sweep over Bangladesh in the ODI series.
– In his innings of 95, he faced 111 balls, hitting 7 fours and 2 sixes.
– Playing his 39th ODI, Zadran has amassed 1,869 runs at an average of 51.91.
– He has scored 6 centuries and 9 fifties in his ODI career.
– Against Bangladesh, he has accumulated 471 runs from 9 matches at an average of 58.87, including one century and three fifties.
– In the recently concluded series, his scores were 23, 95, and 95 across three matches.
Zadran remains a key player for Afghanistan, and following this sanction, will look to maintain discipline alongside his impressive on-field performances.
