**Worms Found in Antibiotic Bottle at Gwalior Government Hospital Amid Ongoing Probe into Toxic Cough Syrup Tragedy**
A government hospital in Gwalior’s Morar town has come under scrutiny after a woman reported finding worms in a bottle of antibiotic medicine given to her child. This incident follows closely on the heels of a tragic case in Madhya Pradesh, where a toxic cough syrup reportedly claimed the lives of 24 children.
Officials confirmed the complaint on Thursday and took immediate action by sealing the entire stock of Azithromycin antibiotic oral suspension at the Morar government hospital. Samples have been sent for laboratory testing in Bhopal to determine the extent of contamination.
According to Drug Inspector Anubhuti Sharma, “A woman at the government hospital in Morar complained of worms in a bottle of Azithromycin oral suspension.” Although the bottle submitted by the complainant was already opened, authorities launched an immediate investigation into the matter.
All 306 bottles of the antibiotic — both distributed and stored at the hospital — have been recalled and seized to prevent any further risk to patients.
Preliminary inspections of some bottles showed no visible signs of insects, but officials emphasized that laboratory testing is essential to confirm whether contamination is present.
The antibiotic in question is a generic Azithromycin oral suspension, widely prescribed to children to treat infections. It is manufactured by a company based in Madhya Pradesh.
Samples from the hospital stock have been dispatched to laboratories in Bhopal, with additional samples sent to the Central Drug Laboratory in Kolkata for thorough examination.
This complaint has sparked widespread concern, especially in the aftermath of the recent tragedy in Madhya Pradesh’s Chhindwara district, where at least 24 children died due to suspected renal failure linked to adulterated Coldrif cough syrup.
Authorities continue their investigations to ascertain the safety of medicines provided by government health facilities and to prevent any further incidents.
