The move to impose additional tariffs on Colombia was already hinted at by Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC), who met with former President Donald Trump earlier in the day. In a statement following their meeting, Graham described the new levies as “major” and warned, “Those who continue to be involved in narcoterrorism against the United States will pay a very heavy price.”
Trump has been engaged in a months-long feud with Colombian President Gustavo Petro, which appeared to reach a peak on Sunday. In a scathing post on Truth Social, Trump accused Petro of being an “illegal drug leader” who has been “strongly encouraging the massive production of drugs, in big and small fields, all over Colombia.”
Following this, Trump threatened to strike these drug production facilities and announced plans to cut all U.S. subsidies to Colombia, calling them “nothing more than a long term rip off of America.”
