The state Department of Education is urging families whose income has been affected by furloughs or job losses due to the federal government shutdown to apply for free or reduced-price school meals for the current school year. Applications and program details are available online at [go.hidoe.us/FRPM](https://go.hidoe.us/FRPM).
Federal employees who have been furloughed or are not receiving pay should enter “0” for income when applying.
**New this school year:** Students eligible for reduced-price meals will receive one free breakfast and one free lunch each school day. Additionally, families approved for free meals are also eligible for free school bus services.
Once approved, benefits remain in effect for the rest of the school year.
“The Department remains committed to ensuring that our students and families have access to nutritious meals and a supportive learning environment during this uncertain time,” said DOE Superintendent Keith Hayashi. “We encourage impacted families to reach out and take advantage of the resources and benefits available.”
The DOE also highlighted additional resources for families, students, and staff:
– **Mental health support:** Families can check with their schools for available mental health services. Free parent coaching and mental health tools are also available statewide.
– **Family assistance and support:** Resources include the Aloha United Way Resource Referral Line, local foodbank assistance centers, and Hawaiian Electric Company payment arrangements.
Families are encouraged to apply as soon as possible to ensure students continue to have access to essential support during the federal shutdown.
