Brigitte Bardot is alive and well. The French actress, 91, shut down rumors of her death in a message on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday.
“I don’t know who is the idiot who started this ‘fake news’ about my disappearance but know that I am doing well and I have no plan on taking my bow. A word to the wise,” Bardot said in her post, originally written in French.
The Post reached out to Bardot’s representative for further comment.
Recently, 27-year-old influencer Aqababe, whose real name is Aniss Zitouni, claimed in a now-deleted social media post that Bardot had died in France. “According to my exclusive information, Brigitte Bardot died today,” Zitouni wrote, according to the Daily Mail. “Her coffin was ordered in Saint-Paul-de-Jarrat in the 09 (Ariège) department.”
“An icon has passed away, leaving behind an unforgettable legacy and an eternal imprint on the hearts of the French,” the influencer added.
On October 16, French newspaper Var-Matin reported that Bardot had been hospitalized in Toulon, France, for nearly three weeks. The retired actress and model reportedly came down with a “serious illness” during a stay at her Saint-Tropez home and had to undergo surgery at a private hospital.
Bardot had previously been rushed to the hospital in July 2023 due to breathing issues. “It was around 9 a.m. when Brigitte had trouble breathing,” her husband, Bernard d’Ormale, told a local outlet at the time, according to the Los Angeles Times.
“It was stronger than usual but she didn’t lose consciousness. The firemen came and gave her oxygen and then stayed to monitor her,” d’Ormale added. He also mentioned that “like all people of a certain age, she can no longer stand the heat.”
Brigitte Bardot was a sex symbol of the 1950s and 1960s, starring in movies such as 1956’s *And God Created Woman*, 1960’s *The Truth*, and 1965’s *Viva Maria!*. Beyond her film career, Bardot is also well known as an animal rights activist.
In 1973, just shy of her 40th birthday, she retired from acting.
Her life was recently dramatized in the 2023 French drama series *Bardot*. Series writer-director Danièle Thompson told The Guardian in 2023 that when she reached out to Bardot about the series, “She answered with a very long letter, saying that she was always surprised how unbelievably interested people were in her and did not quite understand why she was not left alone for good.”
“I can’t say that she was excited about it,” Thompson added. “Certainly not.”
