Federal immigration agents were seen deploying tear gas during operations in Lakeview, a wealthy Chicago neighborhood.
A video circulating on social media on Friday afternoon showed an agent rolling a tear gas canister out of a vehicle window as it backed away from onlookers.
Operation Midway Blitz targeted a predominantly white community where many immigrants work, according to the Chicago Tribune.
During the operation, agents reportedly detained a man near a school attended by the children of affluent families and arrested another man at the Laugh Factory comedy club.
Alderman Bennett Lawson (D) condemned the actions, telling the Tribune, “ICE’s un-American and undemocratic tactics of fear and intimidation in our neighborhoods are a direct attack on everything Chicago stands for — inclusion, compassion and love. We have a proud history of welcoming people of all backgrounds in our community, and our commitment to those principles is stronger now than ever.”
Witness video captured the moment Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers deployed tear gas against neighbors who had gathered outside following the incident. In the footage, an agent is seen rolling a canister toward the crowd from the window of a reversing vehicle as bystanders responded with whistles and bicycles.
