Bo Bichette is back. The Blue Jays star will return for the World Series after missing the last month and a half with a sprained posterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. The two-time All-Star has been out since September 6, when he collided with Yankees catcher Austin Wells on a play at the plate.
Bichette is trying out a new position in his return as well. He will hit fourth and play second base for the first time in his big league career in the series opener on Friday night in Toronto. Previously, Bichette spent his entire MLB career playing either shortstop or designated hitter.
“To be honest, I brought it up,” Bichette said about playing second base. “It was something that I felt like I could get ready for quicker than another position. I just want to be ready to help the team in any way that is afforded to me, so that felt like an opportunity for me, and obviously they were on board with it.”
Bichette worked out Thursday at Rogers Centre, which was expected to be the final hurdle in clearing him to make the Blue Jays roster before the World Series kickoff.
“I think after our workout today, there’ll be a lot more understanding of where I stand,” Bichette said Thursday. “For me, I’m just trying to do everything I can to be ready for whatever I’m physically capable of doing. I’m ready to help the team in whatever capacity that is.”
Bichette’s return is a major boost to a Blue Jays lineup that has thrived during his absence throughout this playoff run. In 139 games this season, Bichette hit .311/.357/.483 with 18 home runs and 94 RBIs.
