Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred is increasingly confident that big league players will participate in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. This marks a shift from the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, where MLB did not allow players on 40-man rosters to take part.
To facilitate player participation in the 2028 Games, MLB has discussed creating an extended All-Star break. However, an agreement with the players’ association is necessary before any plans can move forward. Additionally, there are considerations regarding how sponsor deals could be impacted by the players’ involvement in the Olympics.
Manfred noted that logistical issues still need to be worked out to make this possible. It’s important to highlight that MLB views participation in the 2028 Olympics as likely a one-off event, since the 2032 Olympics are scheduled to take place in Brisbane, Australia.
