Gunther is considered by many to be one of the best wrestlers in WWE today. Known as “The Ring General,” he is a two-time World Heavyweight Champion and holds the record as the longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion in the company’s history. His massive size, combined with remarkable agility, makes him a formidable opponent for anyone in the ring.
Gunther has garnered admiration both within and outside the professional wrestling business. WWE Hall of Famer Teddy Long recently compared him to Harley Race, who is widely regarded as “The King of Wrestling.” Speaking on an episode of *The Wrestling Time Machine* on Sportskeeda WrestleBinge, Long supported co-host Mac Davis’ view that Gunther shares similarities with Harley Race, as both come across as legit wrestlers.
“Harley [Race] was legit. And that’s the way Gunther is. That’s what I think Mac is trying to say. He’s legit. Yeah. You can feel him. You’re waiting to see this guy,” Teddy Long said.
Gunther is also notable for being the inaugural WWE United States Champion, although the title was then known as the NWA United States Heavyweight Championship.
### Harley Race — A Legend and Dream Opponent
Harley Race is considered one of the best wrestlers of his era and was the face of the NWA throughout his career. He was an eight-time NWA World Heavyweight Champion and had a legendary rivalry with Ric Flair for the championship.
In a recent conversation with Bill Apter on Sportskeeda Wrestling’s *UnSKripted*, Harley Race’s son named Gunther as the dream opponent, from the current generation, for his father.
Harley Race is one of only six men inducted into the WWE, NWA, WCW, Wrestling Observer Newsletter, and Professional Wrestling Hall of Fames. If Gunther manages to achieve even a fraction of Race’s career success, he will retire as one of the best professional wrestlers in history.
