Jaxson Dart and Cam Skattebo have been closely connected ever since they were drafted by the Giants earlier this season—Dart in the first round and Skattebo in the fourth. Their bond only grew stronger when the rookie duo helped ignite the Giants’ offense after Dart took over the starting quarterback position following an 0-3 start to the season.
It was no surprise, then, to witness Dart’s emotional reaction when Skattebo suffered an apparently serious right ankle injury during the second quarter of Sunday’s game against the Eagles in Philadelphia. Skattebo was hit while attempting to make a catch, and the training staff quickly tended to him on the field. He had a cast placed on his lower right leg before being carted off Lincoln Financial Field.
As Skattebo received medical attention, Dart was visibly distraught—yelling to himself and then taking a knee, seemingly unable to watch his teammate’s injury. Fox cameras also captured third-string quarterback Jameis Winston consoling Dart, placing an arm around his shoulder in support.
Skattebo’s expected extended absence is another setback for a Giants offense already without star wide receiver Malik Nabers, who suffered a torn ACL last month. Despite Nabers’ absence, Dart has revitalized the offense, with Skattebo’s athleticism and vibrant personality playing a key role. Together, they have given Giants fans plenty to cheer for.
Earlier on Sunday, Dart connected with Skattebo on an 18-yard touchdown pass that tied the game at 7-7 late in the first quarter. Just two weeks prior, Skattebo had his best game as a Giant against the Eagles, rushing for three touchdowns and gaining 98 yards on the ground.
It’s worth noting that Skattebo was fined $15,000 for violating the league-mandated concussion protocol during an October 9 game at MetLife Stadium, when he was involved during Dart’s sideline examination. That victory was part of a convincing performance that had the team optimistic about their postseason prospects.
