Michael J. Fox, famously known for his role as Marty McFly in the *Back to the Future* franchise, recently reflected on a memorable moment from his time hosted on *Saturday Night Live* in 1991. In a candid interview, Fox shared his thoughts on Dana Carvey’s surprising and spot-on impression of him during the show.
Celebrating the 40th anniversary of *Back to the Future*, Fox told *Entertainment Weekly*, “He got so into the physical thing. Because I used to do a thing where I’d put my hands in my pockets, do a 360, and leap up on the counter. I never imagined that he’d do it but he got that, he totally nailed it. He really did. I love Dave a lot, but I really loved Dana’s impression.”
The incident took place during Fox’s *SNL* monologue, where he attempted to joke about his then-new movie, *The Hard Way*. Unfortunately, the joke didn’t land, receiving no response from the audience. At that moment, David Spade and Kevin Nealon appeared from behind the stage, dressed as *Back to the Future* characters Marty McFly and Dr. Emmett Brown (played by Christopher Lloyd).
The real Fox asked Spade’s Marty character, “Who the hell are you?”
Spade replied, “I’m you! I’m Michael J. Fox! I just came from 90 minutes in the future, the show’s a complete dud!”
What followed was a hilarious conversation in which the trio traveled back in time to stop the past version of Fox—played by Dana Carvey—from taking the *SNL* gig.
During the skit, Carvey perfectly captured Fox’s unique demeanor and physicality, a portrayal that clearly took Fox by surprise. The impression left a lasting impact on the actor, who fondly recalls the experience even today.
Despite his praise for Carvey, Fox wasn’t as confident about his own performance, describing it as “pretty milquetoast and generic.” Nevertheless, he reflected positively on the moment, calling it a “really good” experience and an unforgettable highlight in his career.
