A cruise employee tragically died following an unknown onboard accident, forcing the ship to make an unscheduled stop in Spain just two days into its two-week transatlantic voyage between England and the Caribbean.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with their family and friends both on board and at home, and we are providing every possible support to them,” the cruise line said in a statement.
The ship made an unscheduled stop at the Port of A Coruña, located in the northwest part of Spain, on Sunday. It remained docked from 3 p.m. until night, when it set sail again for Tenerife, according to officials at the Port of A Coruña who posted the update on X. No further details regarding the incident were provided, and the cause of death has not been revealed. The Post has reached out to the cruise line for further comment.
P&O Cruises, owned by Carnival UK, confirmed it is offering “every possible support” to the crew member’s family and friends, both on board and off the ship.
The United Kingdom’s Marine Accident Investigation Branch is scheduled to board the ship at its next port of call “to start a preliminary assessment of the accident and to determine the next steps,” the BBC reported.
The Bermuda-flagged vessel departed from Southampton, England, on October 24, en route to Santa Cruz de Tenerife on Spain’s Canary Islands, off the western coast of Africa.
The Excellence-class cruise ship can accommodate 5,200 guests and 1,800 crew members, according to P&O Cruises. Nicknamed “The Sunshine Ship,” it is the newest addition to the cruise line’s fleet, having embarked on its maiden voyage on December 23, 2022.
This tragic incident occurred just hours before another cruise employee went overboard from the Viking Star in the Mediterranean Sea on Monday morning. An emergency response and search operation were launched for the unidentified crew member. At the time, the Viking Star was in the midst of an eight-day, seven-night cruise between Athens, Greece, and stops in Turkey and the Greek island of Crete.
