Two men were taken into custody Tuesday evening after California Highway Patrol (CHP) units tracked a pair of stolen Toyota Tacoma trucks in a pursuit traveling through the Santa Clarita Valley, with one ending in a violent crash.
The incident began around 6:28 p.m. on Oct. 28 when units received reports of a stolen black Toyota Tacoma traveling northbound on I-405, just south of I-5, according to CHP Newhall officials. The vehicle’s registered owner was remotely tracking its movements and relaying updates to officers.
CHP units soon spotted not one, but two Toyota Tacomas—a black and a gray—driving together northbound on State Route 14 south of Newhall Avenue. The chase continued northbound on the 14 before the driver exited at Sand Canyon Road and headed east, making what officers described as several reckless maneuvers.
As the suspect passed Placerita Canyon Road, he lost control and crashed. The driver, identified as Lamar Bryant, who previously had a felony pursuit conviction, sustained major injuries and was transported to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital. Investigators later confirmed the gray Tacoma was stolen.
Meanwhile, the driver of the black Toyota Tacoma, identified as Jose Avila, continued northbound on the 14. Officers stopped him at the Santiago Road off-ramp, where he yielded and was arrested without incident. Avila was booked on suspicion of possession of a stolen vehicle.
The incident remains under investigation.
