**US Department of Homeland Security Ends Automatic Extension of Employment Authorization Documents**
*NDTV World | October 30, 2025 | By Aastha Ahuja*
The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced an interim rule that will stop the automatic extension of Employment Authorization Documents (EAD) for migrant workers. This change is expected to affect thousands of foreign employees, including a significant number of Indians who constitute a large portion of the expatriate workforce in the United States.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the Department clarified, “Aliens who file to renew their EAD on or after October 30, 2025 (Thursday), will no longer receive an automatic extension of their EAD.” It is important to note that EADs automatically extended before October 30, 2025, will not be affected by this new rule.
The new measure, introduced to enhance national security, will subject migrant workers to more thorough vetting and screening processes. According to the DHS, this step aims to protect public safety and uphold national security.
The US government highlighted that the rule involves more frequent background reviews of migrant workers. This increased scrutiny is designed to enable the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to “deter fraud and detect aliens with potentially harmful intent.”
Calling the measure “common sense,” USCIS Director Joseph Edlow emphasized that working in the US is “a privilege, not a right.”
