Legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has said that if the Indian women’s team wins the 2025 ODI World Cup, he would sing a song with star batter Jemimah Rodrigues. His light-hearted remark came after the Women in Blue’s historic semi-final victory against Australia on Thursday, October 30, at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.
Opting to bat first, Australia posted a mammoth 338 in 49.5 overs. In response, Jemimah Rodrigues starred for the hosts, remaining unbeaten on 127 off 134 balls, hitting 14 fours as India clinched victory by five wickets with nine balls to spare. This marked the highest successful run chase in women’s ODI cricket history, sealing India’s place in the final.
Following the game, during a discussion on India Today, Sunil Gavaskar said that if India wins the World Cup, he would love to sing a song with Jemimah. Gavaskar said:
“All I can say is that if India wins the World Cup, she (Jemi) and I, if she’s okay to do that, we will sing a song together, she with her guitar and I will sing a song. We did that at one of the BCCI awards, I think a couple of years back or three years back. There was a band who were playing there, and then we decided, look, let’s go and do something. So we sang a song, she was on the guitar, she plays the guitar very well, and I was, with my whatever voice, I did sing a song. But if India win, I would, and if she’s happy to do that, happy to do that with an old man, I’m all for it.”
Harmanpreet Kaur’s side will face South Africa in the summit clash, scheduled to be played on Sunday, November 2, in Navi Mumbai.
### “That you have to sort out” — Sunil Gavaskar highlights key area for India ahead of the World Cup final
In the same interaction, Sunil Gavaskar asserted that the Women in Blue will need to sort out their bowling for the death overs and correct their errors if they are to win the final against South Africa. The 76-year-old said:
“What they (Women in Blue) need to do really is to get their last five or six overs right. If they can get their last five or six overs right, who are they going to give the ball to? That is the most important thing. We’ve been seeing that in the last four or five overs, even when defending scores in the earlier matches where we lost to South Africa and we lost to Australia. I think when we were defending scores, it’s our bowlers, the final-over bowlers, that you have to sort out.”
He added, “If you can do that, stop throwing unnecessarily at the stumps, because everybody does that, it can only mean overthrows. We saw today that there were 10 runs conceded because of overthrows, 10 runs which could have made the difference between winning and losing. Luckily, it did not. And if they get the little things right, then they will be all right in the final.”
Earlier in the tournament, during the league stage, South Africa defeated Harmanpreet Kaur’s side by three wickets while chasing a target of 252.
