CHICAGO (WLS) – As Chicagoans sound the alarm over potentially crippling cuts to the CTA, suburban counties are hitting the gas on their own transit solution.
Kane, Lake, and McHenry counties have been testing an on-demand “dial-a-ride” program. This service offers regularly scheduled rides, particularly aimed at seniors, people with disabilities, or those who do not drive.
The program has become a lifeline for many residents, filling an important gap in public transit options. However, it is not without limitations, and lawmakers remain divided over funding for this fledgling effort.
The Illinois Answers Project has investigated how on-demand transit is funded across Illinois. You can read their full report at illinoisanswers.org.
