Both the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and Mossad are ramping up preparations in response to potential attacks from Iranian-backed militias operating within Iraq’s borders, according to a report by the Jerusalem Post citing unnamed military sources.
Tehran has reportedly invested heavily in pro-Iranian militias as well as in terrorist infrastructure within Iraq to expand the emerging threat. Recently, Esmail Qaani, commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Quds Force (IRGC-QF), visited Iraq to meet with senior militia leaders, highlighting the seriousness of the situation.
The Jerusalem Post indicates that any attack on Israel could come by land or air. The IDF believes that missiles and drones would likely be launched from Iraqi territory initially. Following this, ground infiltrations could occur, beginning in Iraq, moving through Syria, and potentially reaching the Israel-Jordan border.
One key group supported by the IRGC-QF is Kataib Hezbollah, a powerful militia operating under the umbrella of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF). Kataib Hezbollah is considered one of the most influential militias in the region, boasting an extensive arsenal that includes long-range drones. The group also controls vital smuggling routes between Iraq and Syria, facilitating the transit of weapons and operatives.
On the international front, Iran suffered significant setbacks during the 12-day conflict with Israel in June, enduring severe damages to its nuclear program.
As tensions continue to rise, the vigilance of the IDF and Mossad underscores the growing concern over Iran’s expanding influence and military capabilities within Iraq and the surrounding region.
