SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Walker Eget threw two touchdown passes to Danny Scudero, Steve Chavez-Soto added three rushing TDs, and San Jose State defeated Hawaii 45-35 on Saturday night.
San Jose State (2-5, 1-2 Mountain West Conference) has now won five consecutive games against Hawaii. The Rainbow Warriors (6-3, 3-2) had their three-game winning streak snapped.
Landon Sims ran for a 2-yard touchdown late in the third quarter, and Micah Alejado threw a 20-yard TD pass to Jackson Harris to bring the score to 38-35 with 9:32 remaining. However, San Jose State responded with a seven-play, 75-yard drive, culminating with Chavez-Soto’s third touchdown—a 1-yard run—that gave the Spartans a 10-point lead with 5:41 left to play.
Eget completed 20 of 40 passes for 458 yards without throwing an interception. Scudero had seven receptions for 215 yards. The sophomore transfer from Sacramento State entered the game leading the nation in receiving yards (870) and receiving yards per game (124.3), and he now has 10 touchdowns this season.
Hawaii’s Cam Barfield opened the scoring with a 1-yard run in the first quarter, but San Jose State answered by scoring the next 21 points to take the lead for good. Chavez-Soto scored on runs of 10 and 20 yards, while Lamar Radcliffe added a 2-yard touchdown run, giving the Spartans a 14-point advantage with 5:40 remaining in the second quarter.
Alejado connected with Harris on a 68-yard touchdown pass to make it 21-14 about 90 seconds later. Eget then threw a 50-yard touchdown pass to Scudero with 3:29 left in the first half, and Mathias Brown kicked a 24-yard field goal in the final seconds to extend the lead to 17 points at halftime.
The Rainbow Warriors began the second half with a nine-play, 70-yard drive that consumed five minutes and cut their deficit to 10 points when Alejado hit Sims for a 6-yard touchdown. However, three plays later, Eget threw a 62-yard touchdown pass to Scudero, increasing San Jose State’s lead to 38-21.
Hawaii’s Alejado and Kansei Matsuzawa capped the scoring with a 24-yard field goal. Matsuzawa’s 21 field goals this season tie Richard Spielman’s program record set in 1984.
